Who We Are

Stephanie Looi graduated from King’s College London in 2003 and was admitted to the Singapore Bar in 2005 as an Advocate and Solicitor after having trained with a Senior Counsel in a leading matrimonial law firm in Singapore.

Since then, she has acquired vast experience in family law litigation. Stephanie appears regularly for clients at all levels of the Singapore Courts on all matters affecting the family including division of matrimonial assets, maintenance, custody and international relocation, trust and property disputes, family violence, child abduction as well as cross-border child and financial related matters.

She is also highly experienced in both contentious and non-contentious probate proceedings involving large estates and personal disputes, as well as acting for deputies in cases of Mental Capacity Act (both contested and non-contested).

Apart from family litigation, Stephanie also frequently advises and represents clients in the drafting of relevant Prenuptial and Postnuptial Deeds, which are particularly useful to clients who have significant pre-marital assets and advising them on setting up a framework that helps protect their assets and to reduce unnecessary acrimony.

In addition to her wealth of experience in the area of family law, Stephanie also maintains an active civil and commercial dispute practice, representing personal and corporate clients in cases involving complicated legal and factual issues. 

Stephanie has also given several talks in both English and Chinese language on wills, lasting power of attorney and divorce matters to various organizations such as Singapore Press Holdings and most recently to Singapore Tourism Board.

Stephanie has been involved in many notable matters. Here are just a few:

• CLS v CLT [2022] SGHC (A) 29:- Stephanie represented the UHNW husband in the divorce proceedings and successfully argued at the hearing before the Appellate Division of the High Court for a category of asset to be excluded from the asset pool for division, resulting in the matrimonial asset pool for division to be reduced substantially from $53 million to $42 million.
• TNL v TNK [2017] SGCA 15:- Stephanie successfully represented the wife in the High Court and Court of Appeal hearing. The case was significant in that the Court of Appeal clarified that the structured approach towards the division of matrimonial assets set out in ANJ v ANK [2015] 4 SLR 1043 (“the ANJ approach”) should not be applied to marriages where one spouse was the sole income earner and the other played the role of homemaker (“Single-Income Marriages”).
• VOU v VOT [ 2021] SGHCF 6:- This was a case involving short marriage between a 78 year old husband and 59 year old wife, both of whom are in their second marriages. Stephanie acted for the husband and successfully defended against the appeal brought by the wife in the High Court for maintenance despite the fact that the wife was self sufficient all the while. The case was significant in that the High Court confirmed that pre-marital lifestyle and pre-marital circumstances are irrelevant in the determination of ancillary matters in divorce proceedings.
• UYD v UYE and others [2019] SGHCF 20:- Stephanie represented the homemaker wife in the High Court in a high net-worth case and successfully argued for a 45/55 split of the assets in a long marriage.
• Tan Cheng Guan v Tan Hwee Lee [2011] SGHC 216:- Stephanie represented the homemaker wife in a long marriage in the ancillary matters in the High Court. The case was significant in that the High Court established the principle that inter spousal gifts are considered as matrimonial assets to be divided.
• Acting for a Wife in defending against a divorce suit brought on by the plaintiff husband on the grounds of unreasonable behavior and successfully having the writ for divorce dismissed after a lengthy contested divorce trial.
• Advising an overseas UNHW client who owns a conglomerate of companies worldwide with assets exceeding billions on private wealth management and trust issues and drafting up various legal agreements and structures to protect the client’s assets in the event of commencement of divorce proceedings.
• Representing the Husband in a multi-million dollar contested divorce matter in the High Court and in the Court of Appeal, and arguing complex legal arguments on whether certain assets such as gifts from family members constitute matrimonial assets and whether the nature of the gifts changed throughout the various transactions that took place during the marriage.

Outside of work and since childhood, Stephanie takes a longstanding interest in music and dance and currently holds a ABRSM Diploma in Music as well as Royal Academy of Dance (“RAD”).
